You can help - be a donor!

It is important to remember that our success and strength are built upon the generosity of many people. Your financial support will help us continue our mission to enable adults to gain the literacy skills needed to reach their full potential.

Your gift to Literacy Volunteers of America-Cayuga County, Inc. directly supports our continuing efforts to provide literacy services and education for the one in five adults in the US who function at the lowest literacy level.

Contributions to LVA, a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, are deductible for computing income and estate taxes.

  • Donate by Mail You can mail you donations to: LVA-Cayuga County, Inc. 17 Nelson St. Auburn, NY 13021
  • Ask your Employer about matching-gift programs If your employer currently offers a matching gift program, take advantage of the program to increase your support of LVA.
  • Corporate Donor LVA-Cayuga County, Inc. has been able to support many literacy programs through financial support from the corporate community. To learn about the different ways that you can help support LVA-Cayuga, please contact our office at (315) 253-5241 or lvacayco@dreamscape.com
Patron Drive-Friends of Literacy

Dear Friends of LVA-Cayuga:

We are beginning an annual "Friends of Literacy" campaign for donations from individuals who believe in and support our mission to assist individuals to reach their personal educational goals through the improvement in reading, writing and speaking English.

To preserve the core values of our mission as we enter the 21st century, we continue:

  • Training volunteers to be tutors in English as a Second Language and Basic Literacy.
  • Matching and supporting the matches of approximately 100 tutors and learners per year.
  • Working with businesses to develop Workplace Literacy sites for tutoring to take place at local businesses and industries.
  • Networking with Human Service Organizations to connect with services and referrals for adult learners.
  • Working with the Auburn Residential Center and Harriet Tubman Center to provide tutors for incarcerated teens.
  • Raising public awareness of the importance of reading and literacy during the Reading Rally fundraising event.
  • Providing a newsletter to tutors and learners that opens the door to services and communications from the organization.
  • Teaching inmates at Auburn Correctional Facility to tutor and matching them with inmates requiring reading and writing assistance. (Approximately 600 inmates assess below 5th grade in reading levels at ACF.)

Please consider becoming a "Friend of Literacy" this year with a donation. Send your gift to LVA-Cayuga, 17 Nelson Street, Auburn, NY.

Your action will perpetuate a program that began 39 years ago with the vision of a small group of people. Margaret Mead said "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

Sincerely,
Elisa C. Hunt

The Message of the Starfish

"Every day, an old man walked the beach with a pail, picking up starfish that had been washed in by the tide, and throwing them back into the sea. One day a young boy stopped the old, man and asked, "Why do you throw the starfish back? It doesn't matter. They will only wash up on the shore again tomorrow." The old man picked a starfish out of his pail, threw it as far as he could into the sea, and replied… "It mattered to that one." What we do at Literacy Volunteers is important to individuals and our community, let us always remember-it matters!
